Nissan (7201.JP) partners with Uber (UBER.US) to test self-driving taxis in Tokyo by the end of the year.
Nissan Motor (7201.JP), Uber (UBER.US), and Wayve have announced a partnership to launch autonomous taxis in Tokyo later this year. The Nissan Leaf electric taxis will be equipped with Wayve's self-driving technology, while Uber will provide the ride-hailing service. This pilot program is set to begin by the end of the year. Due to regulatory restrictions, Uber’s services in Japan differ from those in other countries, where licensed taxi companies are utilized. Uber has already partnered with over 1,000 taxi companies in Japan and plans to incorporate autonomous vehicles into its fleet in the near future.
Uber, Nissan, and Wayve have joined forces to launch an autonomous taxi service in Tokyo.
Uber, Nissan Motor, and British autonomous driving startup Wayve have reached a partnership to jointly launch an autonomous taxi service, with plans to initiate a pilot project in Tokyo by the end of 2026. The three companies stated that this collaboration marks Uber's first autonomous driving project in Japan, as well as part of Uber and Wayve's efforts to promote autonomous taxi services across more than 10 cities globally. The project aims to integrate Wayve's AI-based autonomous driving system into Nissan's base vehicle models, enabling them to connect to Uber’s ride-hailing platform. In the initial phase, the vehicles will be equipped with specially trained safety operators.
