Express News | Tom Lee: The current crypto bull market has begun, with applications such as tokenization and AI potentially driving the rally far beyond previous cycles.
In an interview, Tom Lee, Chief Investment Officer at Fundstrat, explained why the current crypto bull market differs from previous cycles. He stated, “The ongoing cryptocurrency bull market has been confirmed. As of the third quarter, crypto-related stocks are undoubtedly the best-performing assets.” Discussing the distinctions of this cycle, he noted, “The 2016–2017 cycle was characterized by ICOs; the pandemic-era cycle featured NFTs and meme coins; and last year’s mini-cycle revolved around stablecoins. These were relatively narrow use cases, with participants primarily consisting of crypto industry veterans returning after previous losses.” Regarding the changes in the current cycle, he highlighted, “Tokenization will develop on a very large scale; the regulatory environment is becoming more supportive of the crypto industry; governments are also providing support; meanwhile, AI, intelligent agent systems, and related applications are being built around the crypto industry. This implies that a much larger user base will participate.” On the current market environment, he remarked, “The market has undergone significant price consolidation, lasting up to five years in some cases. With the arrival of this bull market, we will not only see a decisive breakout, but its duration and upside potential will also far exceed those of previous cycles.”
U.S. nonfarm payrolls in September came in well below expectations, weakening bets on a rate hike in October and prompting traders to no longer fully price in another Fed rate increase this year.
U.S. nonfarm payrolls increased by just 29,000 in September, well below the expected 90,000, while the unemployment rate edged up to 4.2% from 4.1% in August. Following the release, the probability of a Fed rate hike in October fell from 29% to 17%, and the cumulative rate‑hike expectation for the remaining two meetings this year was revised down to roughly 21 basis points. The yield on the two-year Treasury note dropped 10 basis points in a single day, and S&P 500 futures rose 0.8%. Economists attribute the unusually weak reading to distortions in seasonal adjustments rather than a fundamental shift in the labor market.
