Citi: Rupiah pressure may ease temporarily in the third quarter
Gelonghui, July 6 | Citi expects pressure on the rupiah to ease somewhat in the third quarter as Indonesia’s current account improves, but warns that persistent structural weaknesses could limit this relief. Citi forecasts the current account deficit to narrow to around 1% of GDP in the third quarter, supported by lower oil prices, higher mining output, and weak imports, and to fall below 1% in the fourth quarter, economist Helmi Arman wrote in a report following meetings with policymakers from July 1–3. Citi still believes Bank Indonesia has completed its rate-hiking cycle, but weak capital inflows may leave the central bank with little room to maneuver.
