Chilean Finance Minister Mario Marcel resigns, as the government loses its most market-friendly official.
According to local media reports, Chilean Finance Minister Mario Marcel resigned on Thursday for personal reasons. The government has lost one of its most market-friendly officials. As reported by Canal 13 television, Marcel entered the presidential palace in the morning to finalize his resignation. Following the announcement of his resignation, the Chilean peso weakened. The benchmark stock index continued to rise, while interest rate swaps increased slightly. Marcel was the main liaison between the Chilean government and investors, frequently visiting Congress to discuss President Boric's economic proposals. He previously worked at the central bank and the government budget office. His resignation comes as Chile prepares to hold a referendum later this year.
