Express News | U.S. media: As traditional automakers retreat, Tesla is reclaiming the U.S. electric-vehicle market.
According to the Wall Street Journal, recent sales data show that as traditional automakers pull back from the electric-vehicle sector, Tesla (TSLA.O) is once again expanding its share of the U.S. EV market. Data from Motor Intelligence indicate that Tesla has regained more than half of the U.S. EV market, with a 52% share in the first eight months of 2026—up from 43% during the same period last year. Even so, Tesla has not escaped the broader market downturn. Year-to-date, its U.S. sales stand at 325,351 vehicles, down 16% compared with the same period last year. However, the overall EV market has contracted even more sharply, falling by 30%. Tesla once accounted for over 80% of U.S. EV sales, but in recent years, as established automakers like Hyundai, Ford, and General Motors have launched their own electric models, its market share has steadily declined. By 2025, Tesla's share had dropped to a record low of 41%, a decline attributed—at least in part—to Elon Musk's foray into politics and his collaboration with the Trump administration to reduce the size of the federal government, which alienated some buyers and sparked protests outside Tesla stores. Today, the Austin, Texas–based company is regaining ground, even as it has scaled back its core automotive business.
