Strong buying interest driven by expectations of a pullback is evident.
[Equity Market Opening Comment] The Japanese stock market on the 17th is expected to see profit-taking following trends in the U.S. market, though strong buying interest aimed at purchasing on dips is likely to remain evident. In the U.S. market on the 14th, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by $107, and Nasdaq dropped by 73 points. Concerns about a slowdown in consumption and economic growth surfaced as a series of economic indicators, including July U.S. retail sales and the August University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index, came in below expectations. Rising crude oil futures prices also weighed on the market.

The market faced downward pressure due to position adjustments ahead of the weekend.
The Nikkei Stock Average extended its gains for the fourth consecutive trading session, closing up 405.21 yen at 68,713.80 yen (with estimated trading volume of 2.44 billion shares). Buoyed by the previous day’s buying of tech stocks in the U.S. market, Tokyo shares rose, led by semiconductor and AI-related stocks, pushing the Nikkei as high as 69,608.24 yen. During trading hours, the index reclaimed the psychologically significant 69,000-yen level for the first time in about a month, since July 13. However, as the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI), which had been trending firmly higher, narrowed its gains,
SBI Securities (intraday) recorded net selling in Advantest and net buying in Lasertec.
