OpenAI and Anthropic Lobby S&P for BBB- Rating: Nearing Trillion-Dollar Valuations Amid Persistent Losses Challenge Credit Thresholds
AI laboratories such as OpenAI and Anthropic are lobbying S&P and Moody's to secure a BBB- investment-grade credit rating, akin to that of Oracle, in order to broaden their financing channels. However, the financial profiles of these entities differ significantly: while AI labs boast valuations nearing $1 trillion, they continue to incur losses, whereas Oracle maintains stable profitability but carries a debt burden of $168 billion. Rating agencies face a dilemma: overly lenient standards would underestimate risk, while excessively stringent criteria could draw criticism for being outdated.
Express News | Mining companies collectively lag behind: Bitcoin rises 22% in this rally, while the median gain among ten mining stocks is only 1.8%.
Since August 17, Bitcoin’s price has risen by approximately 22%, with shares of crypto trading platforms and stablecoin-related companies strengthening in tandem. However, Bitcoin mining firms have clearly underperformed. Among the 11 Bitcoin mining companies and related entities analyzed, only Canaan outperformed BTC; the other ten companies trailed Bitcoin, with a median gain of just 1.8% during the period. Core Scientific and TeraWulf posted the weakest performance, lagging behind Bitcoin by 27% and 24%, respectively. Analysts note that some mining firms have shifted toward high-performance computing (HPC) and AI data center operations in recent years. While this transition helped support stock prices during the crypto bear market, it also diverted focus from Bitcoin mining and introduced additional operational risks. Nevertheless, the dual strategy of AI data centers and Bitcoin mining could become a long-term advantage for mining firms: mining operations benefit during bull markets, while AI data centers can strengthen corporate balance sheets during downturns in the crypto market.
