Global index provider S&P Dow Jones Indices warned that Indonesia faces the risk of being downgraded from emerging market to frontier market status due to concerns over market transparency, echoing a similar warning from rival MSCI and delivering another blow to Southeast Asia’s largest economy. MSCI: Review of Indonesia's market status postponed to November; downgrade to 'Frontier Market' possible if insufficient progress is made.
Global index provider MSCI announced it will defer its review of Indonesia’s market classification until November this year, explicitly warning that if insufficient progress is made by then, it will consider downgrading Indonesia from 'Emerging Market' to 'Frontier Market' status. In its statement, MSCI noted that recent transparency reforms introduced by Indonesian regulators and exchanges are 'headed in the right direction,' but emphasized that global investors are primarily concerned with whether these measures will be consistently and effectively implemented. Although the transparency reforms launched by Indonesian authorities have been acknowledged, their execution remains to be tested. Since the downgrade warning was issued in January, foreign investors have net sold approximately USD 4 billion worth of Indonesian equities, and the Jakarta Composite Index (IDX) has declined year-to-date.

Indonesia's central bank unexpectedly announced on Tuesday (9th) an increase of 25 basis points in its benchmark seven-day reverse repo rate, raising it to 5.5%. This follows a larger-than-expected 50-basis-point hike in May, bringing the total rate increase to 75 basis points within three weeks. The central bank had originally scheduled its next policy meeting for next week. This marks the second off-cycle rate hike since Governor Perry Warjiyo took the helm of Bank Indonesia nearly eight years ago. The central bank stated that further measures are necessary to stabilize the rupiah exchange rate by raising yields and offering various incentives to encourage foreign capital inflows. The statement added that this rate hike is a follow-up measure aimed at
