S&P Dow Jones Indices has placed Indonesia on its downgrade watch list.
Global index provider S&P Dow Jones Indices warned that Indonesia faces the risk of being downgraded from emerging market to frontier market status due to concerns over market transparency, echoing a similar warning from rival MSCI and delivering another blow to Southeast Asia’s largest economy. In a statement released Tuesday evening (7th), S&P Dow Jones Indices said Indonesia, along with Turkey, has been placed on a watchlist for potential inclusion in next year’s market review process. Nigeria, meanwhile, is on the list for a potential upgrade from standalone market to frontier market status. S&P Dow Jones Indices stated it will continue monitoring Indonesia’s progress in improving
MSCI: Review of Indonesia's market status postponed to November; downgrade to 'Frontier Market' possible if insufficient progress is made.
Global index provider MSCI announced it will defer its review of Indonesia’s market classification until November this year, explicitly warning that if insufficient progress is made by then, it will consider downgrading Indonesia from 'Emerging Market' to 'Frontier Market' status. In its statement, MSCI noted that recent transparency reforms introduced by Indonesian regulators and exchanges are 'headed in the right direction,' but emphasized that global investors are primarily concerned with whether these measures will be consistently and effectively implemented. Although the transparency reforms launched by Indonesian authorities have been acknowledged, their execution remains to be tested. Since the downgrade warning was issued in January, foreign investors have net sold approximately USD 4 billion worth of Indonesian equities, and the Jakarta Composite Index (IDX) has declined year-to-date.
Bank Indonesia unexpectedly raised interest rates by 25 basis points, causing the rupiah to rise 0.6%; Barclays expects another 50-basis-point hike at next week’s meeting.
Indonesia's central bank unexpectedly announced on Tuesday (9th) an increase of 25 basis points in its benchmark seven-day reverse repo rate, raising it to 5.5%. This follows a larger-than-expected 50-basis-point hike in May, bringing the total rate increase to 75 basis points within three weeks. The central bank had originally scheduled its next policy meeting for next week. This marks the second off-cycle rate hike since Governor Perry Warjiyo took the helm of Bank Indonesia nearly eight years ago. The central bank stated that further measures are necessary to stabilize the rupiah exchange rate by raising yields and offering various incentives to encourage foreign capital inflows. The statement added that this rate hike is a follow-up measure aimed at

HSBC: Stock markets are pricing in a 'recession' rather than 'stagflation,' presenting oversold opportunities in emerging markets.
HSBC strategists pointed out that although the Middle East conflict has driven up oil prices, the logic behind the market selloff actually stems from concerns over an economic recession. Models indicate that the probability of a recession priced into the stock market has surged from 10% to 35%, while the probability of stagflation has remained almost unchanged. The sharp selloff has created buying opportunities in some emerging markets.
