Nebius and CoreWeave—two computing power leasing companies with NVIDIA equity stakes—released their Q2 financial reports around August 12, both exceeding market expectations. More importantly, management from both companies independently highlighted the same phenomenon during their earnings calls: AI computing power leasing prices are hitting record highs, with particularly significant premiums for short-term contracts. The three major U.S. stock indices closed higher across the board, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising 0.13%, the S&P 500 gaining 0.65%, and the Nasdaq Composite advancing 0.81%. Salesforce surged more than 4% and Merck rose 2%, leading gains in the Dow. The Wind U.S. Mag 7 Index climbed 0.82%, with Tesla up over 3.5% and Facebook (Meta) rising more than 2.5%. SpaceX fell more than 3%. The Nasdaq Golden Dragon China Index dropped 1.84%, with JD.com declining over 7% and PDD Holdings falling more than 5%.

According to media reports, private equity giant Silver Lake is in negotiations to acquire Workday. The news spurred a surge of up to 30% in Workday’s shares and lifted AI software stocks including Cloudflare, Palantir, and Salesforce. Workday had previously been a prime target in the narrative of AI disrupting the software industry; as of Wednesday’s close, its stock was down 18% year-to-date.
