The EIA sharply cut its oil price forecasts for this year and next, expects the Strait of Hormuz to largely normalize by year-end, and notes that the AI boom is driving U.S. electricity consumption to consecutive annual highs.
According to the EIA report, the expected prices for Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil this year have both been revised down by nearly 14% from a month ago, to $82 and $76.26 per barrel, respectively; next year’s expected prices have been reduced by approximately 18%, to $65 and $60.76 per barrel. As AI data centers continue to expand, commercial electricity demand is projected to surpass residential demand for the first time in history this year. U.S. crude oil production forecasts for this year have been slightly revised upward to 13.8 million barrels per day, though shale oil expansion is expected to slow; next year’s production forecast has been marginally lowered to 14 million barrels per day. ① As the U.S.-Iran agreement nears implementation, liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers stranded in the Persian Gulf are preparing to depart the Strait of Hormuz; ② Since the outbreak of conflict in February, only 15 LNG carriers have left the Gulf region over the past several months, triggering a global LNG supply crisis; ③ Once the U.S.-Iran agreement is finalized, LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz are expected to gradually resume.
How long can the U.S.-Iran deal hold? If it collapses, could UK inflation exceed 4% and prompt a return of interest rate hikes?
During the Asian session on Tuesday (June 16), the British pound weakened against the U.S. dollar, currently down approximately 0.1% to around 1.3400. The modest decline in sterling is closely linked to further diminishing market expectations for a Bank of England rate hike. Recent analysis suggests that the U.S.-Iran deal is altering the UK’s inflation outlook. If the U.S.-Iran agreement holds and oil shipments resume normal operations, UK inflation is likely to remain below 4%, allowing the Bank of England to avoid raising interest rates this summer. Thursday’s upcoming monetary policy decision is expected to result in a 7-to-2 vote in favor of maintaining rates unchanged. In the Bank of England’s rate decision this Thursday,

Invesco expects the likelihood of interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve and the Bank of England this year to be low, with oil prices gradually declining in the second half of the year.
Benjamin Jones, Head of Global Research at Invesco, noted on the 100th day of the ongoing Middle East conflict that the latest U.S.-Iran ceasefire agreement appears nominally intact, though sporadic exchanges of fire have continued recently. The current situation has shifted toward limited strikes rather than the sustained hostilities seen in the early phase of the conflict. Invesco’s 'status quo' scenario remains its central baseline case. To date, despite official data showing only very limited vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, the global economy and markets have demonstrated a far more resilient response to this supply shock than initially anticipated. Notably, pipeline flows via Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have increased.
