What is the European Central Bank?
The European Central Bank is the central bank of the euro zone, which is made up of several European countries, with the euro as the only official currency. The ECB is responsible for managing monetary policy and ensuring the value of the euro. Given the relative size of the eurozone economy, the measures taken by the ECB have attracted as much attention as US traders' attention to Fed policy.
The ECB's management is very similar to that of the Federal Reserve. Decisions are made by the management committee, which consists of six members of the executive committee plus the governors of euro-zone central banks.
