Hong Kong Market Movement | Coal stocks broadly declined, with Yancoal Australia down 4.4%, as coal prices continue to retreat and peak-season expectations remain unfulfilled.
Gelonghui, July 7 | Hong Kong-listed coal stocks declined collectively, with Feishang Anthracite dropping more than 8%, Power Development and Huili Resources each falling nearly 5%, Yancoal Australia down 4.4%, Yankuang Energy declining close to 4%, China Coal Energy down nearly 3%, China Shenhua falling over 2%, and Shougang Resources and Nannan Resources following the downward trend. The immediate cause of the coal sector’s decline was the recent sustained correction in coal prices. As of July 6, the market price for 5,500 kcal/kg thermal coal at Qinhuangdao Port stood at RMB 816 per tonne, down RMB 30 per tonne week-on-week, marking a cumulative decline of RMB 47 per tonne in this cycle. The anticipated peak-season demand has failed to materialize, as nationwide rainfall has been frequent recently and high-temperature weather has arrived later than expected.
Strong seasonal demand and supply contraction together lay the foundation for a rebound; institutions suggest coal prices may bottom out and start rising around mid-July.
As high summer temperatures gradually spread nationwide, coal prices during the peak season are underpinned by strong fundamentals, and a bottoming-out followed by a rebound is expected around mid-July.
