“Balance Sheet Reduction ≠ Tightening”! Morgan Stanley Explains the Fed’s “Asymmetric Balance Sheet Runoff”
Morgan Stanley's Chief Economist, Seth Carpenter, noted that the Federal Reserve's balance sheet reduction is not equivalent to monetary policy tightening, and markets have long held a fundamental misinterpretation of the relationship between the two. According to Morgan Stanley's latest report, the firm believes the Fed could shrink its balance sheet by approximately $1.5 trillion over the next several years. Carpenter emphasized in the report that the market impact of this seemingly large figure may be significantly lower than expected—crucially, because the Fed possesses multiple operational tools to achieve balance sheet reduction while maintaining an 'ample reserves' framework and ensuring market liquidity.
Goldman Sachs: Global AI investment will exceed $1 trillion this year, with U.S. investment nearing $600 billion.
Caixin Global, August 10 (Editor: Liu Rui) — Goldman Sachs analysts recently released a report forecasting that global artificial intelligence (AI) investment will exceed USD 1 trillion by the end of 2026, with AI investment in the United States alone expected to approach USD 600 billion. Goldman Sachs estimates that total global AI investment will reach USD 1.019 trillion. The firm noted that the most commonly cited AI investment estimates currently focus on capital expenditure (CAPEX) projections for U.S. mega-cap technology companies. Under this widely accepted assumption, these tech giants are expected to invest approximately USD 800 billion in AI this year. However, Goldman Sachs believes this estimation methodology is flawed.
Iran stated, 'There are currently no negotiations taking place between Iran and the U.S.,' while Trump remarked that he is 'handling it quietly.'
Iran’s Foreign Minister stated that there are currently “no negotiations whatsoever” between Iran and the United States, with both sides communicating only through intermediaries. Meanwhile, Trump said he is “keeping a low profile” on the Iran issue, noting that the U.S. is engaged in “semi-negotiations” and prefers economic pressure over military escalation. Negotiations between Iran and Oman on a temporary shipping corridor have entered their final stage, but Tehran emphasized that this is unrelated to the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which remains contingent upon the U.S. meeting a series of stringent conditions, including troop withdrawal, compensation, and sanctions relief.
