Express News | The three major Japanese automakers all recorded double-digit year-on-year declines in sales in China in August.
As of September 9, the August new car sales data for the three major Japanese automakers in China had been fully released. Toyota Motor, Nissan Motor, and Honda Motor all recorded double-digit year-on-year declines in sales. Toyota's new car sales in China totaled 118,400 units in August, down 22.8% year-on-year, marking the seventh consecutive month below the same period last year. Nissan's sales stood at 28,275 units, a 51.9% year-on-year drop; Honda's sales were 26,749 units, down 49.9% year-on-year, with both companies seeing their sales nearly halve. Nissan's year-on-year sales decline has persisted for five consecutive months, while Honda has trailed its year-earlier levels for 31 straight months. Analysts believe that as price competition among Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers intensifies, EVs with more pronounced price advantages are attracting greater consumer demand, while sales of internal combustion engine vehicles—the mainstay of Japanese automakers—remain sluggish. Impact of Unwinding Yen Carry Trades on the Japanese Stock Market: USD/JPY at 150 Is Not a Threat; Bullish on Real Estate and AI Semiconductor Sectors
Key View: Expectations of One-Sided Yen Appreciation Are Excessive; USD/JPY at 150 Poses No Major Threat to Japanese Equities. Recently, speculation that the Bank of Japan (BOJ) would accelerate interest rate hikes and that the Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF) might adjust its asset allocation drove the yen to appreciate rapidly from 160 to around 153 against the U.S. dollar, sparking concerns about the unwinding of yen carry trades and negative repercussions for the Japanese stock market. However, JPMorgan's FX team considers these expectations overly extreme. The report notes that a rapid appreciation of the yen could instead dampen market expectations for further rate hikes.

UBS Group Morning Express: Australian auto sales rose in August; Eagers Automotive maintains Neutral rating
Key View: Eagers Automotive (APE) reported first-half results that exceeded expectations, driven primarily by order deliveries. Although Eagers Automotive achieved revenue and profit growth in the first half of 2026, this was mainly attributable to the strong performance of BYD and easyauto123, as well as the delivery of backlog orders from previous periods. The core portfolio (such as Toyota) showed weak performance and faced pressure from rising financing costs. Given the potential negative wealth effect from declining property prices and anticipated interest rate hikes, UBS Group considers the stock's risk-reward profile to be balanced.
