Jefferies: Capital expenditure intensity of Chinese cloud service providers (CSPs) remains significantly lower than that of their U.S. AI peers
Jefferies released a report stating that capital expenditure by Chinese cloud service providers (CSPs) surged 105% year-on-year and 95% quarter-on-quarter in the second quarter of this year, driven by robust inference demand and opportunities to procure NVIDIA (NVDA.US) H200 chips. Over the past four quarters, capital expenditure by Chinese CSPs rose only 30% year-on-year, compared with a 76% increase for U.S. CSPs. Despite the one-time spike, the ratio of capital expenditure to sales for Chinese CSPs in the second quarter stood at just 25%, versus 33% for their U.S. counterparts. The firm also expressed concern that the gap between capital expenditure and cloud business revenue among U.S. CSPs continues to widen, even though the U.S. market is characterized by closed-source systems.

With tech giants pouring massive capital into AI, is the return on investment actually viable?
Morgan Stanley estimates that return on capital across different AI business models is attractive: providing API services with proprietary computing power can reach up to 46%, cloud providers leasing GPUs achieve approximately 31%, and those relying on third-party computing power see returns of around 25%. Meanwhile, after the capital expenditures of the four major cloud providers are projected to rise to $1.47 trillion in 2027, their growth rate is expected to decline to approximately 12% in 2028. AI investment is shifting from a focus on computing capacity to commercialization.
