Major Ratings | Citi: The potential merger of ParknShop and Watsons faces key risks of feasibility and prolonged duration.
Gelonghui, April 20 | Citi issued a report mentioning that last Friday, the Financial Times quoted insiders as saying that DFI Retail Group's parent company, Jardine, is in talks with CK Hutchison to acquire the latter's supermarket business (mainly ParknShop under A.S. Watson) and may merge it with DFI's own supermarket business in Hong Kong (mainly Wellcome). Jardine/DFI declined to comment, while CK Hutchison did not respond. Although Citi understands the strategic logic behind this potential merger – creating the largest single supermarket chain locally to counter competitors both within and outside Hong Kong – Citi emphasized that given Hong Kong’s antitrust regulations and DFI management considerations, further complexities remain.
