Express News | Italian Prime Minister Meloni’s pre-election budget receives boost from economic growth
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni aims to introduce a pre-election budget that appeals to voters while reassuring coalition partners, with the Italian economy providing crucial support. Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti now projects Italy’s growth this year at up to 1%, exceeding the previous forecast of 0.6%. This revision grants the government potential fiscal space at a critical juncture in the political cycle. The more optimistic outlook could unlock billions of euros, enabling Meloni and her cabinet to fund promised tax cuts while complying with EU rules. Veronica De Romanis, Professor of Political Economy at LUISS University in Rome, stated, “Given the economic growth recorded so far this year, I consider a growth rate of 0.8% to 0.9% highly likely. All indicators help convey the message to the public that ‘things are moving forward.’”
European Daily: Italy—Exiting the Recovery Fund and Entering an Election Cycle: Rising Macro Risks
Key Views: Italy's short-term economic growth resilience has exceeded expectations, but structural challenges remain severe. Investment and private consumption have driven recent strong momentum, with the implementation of the European Recovery Fund serving as a key tailwind, expected to account for approximately one-third of GDP growth in 2025-26. However, robust employment growth and capital formation have not yet translated into productivity gains; the long-term potential growth rate is projected to slow from 0.8% in the short term to 0.5% in the long term. The 2027 general election represents a key near-term macro-financial risk, with an increased likelihood of political instability. The proposed electoral reform requires the leading coalition to secure at least 42% of the vote to ensure a majority.
