On August 13 local time, the White House issued a statement announcing that President Trump had signed a proclamation imposing ad valorem tariffs ranging from 10% to 100% on imported drones and components, citing national security threats. The proclamation stipulates a 100% ad valorem tariff on drones of specific sizes or with specific functions deemed highly sensitive, as well as on docking stations and certain key components for such drones. This category includes drones with a maximum takeoff weight exceeding 25 kilograms and those equipped with thermal imaging capabilities. Additionally, a 25% ad valorem tariff will be applied to certain smaller drones without specific functions and other drone components. The proclamation also imposes a 15% ad valorem tariff on drones and components from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, and Switzerland. Furthermore, a 10% ad valorem tariff will be levied on drones from the United Kingdom, provided their hardware, software, and technology are substantially sourced from the aforementioned countries and regions, as well as the United States. According to the provisions, the aforementioned tariffs will take effect 21 days after the signing date.
