Viasat has selected Rocket Lab to build geostationary orbit satellites for the U.S. Space Force's Protected Tactical Satellite Communications–Global program.
Rocket Lab will deliver the geostationary orbit version of its high-performance Photon spacecraft platform, equipped with Viasat’s X/Ka dual-band payload. The Photon-Geostationary platform features a high-power architecture and extensively utilizes Rocket Lab’s vertically integrated components and subsystems, including tracking, telemetry, and command radios, solar power systems, star trackers, reaction wheels, and flight and ground software.
Satellites manufactured by Rocket Lab for MDA Space have begun on-orbit operations.
Gelonghui, August 17 | Rocket Lab announced that eight platform satellites manufactured for MDA Space have successfully reached orbit, marking the first deployment under a $143 million contract covering 17 spacecraft. The satellites were launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 9:12 p.m. Eastern Time on August 15. Rocket Lab stated that the company has established contact with all eight spacecraft, which have begun generating power and are operating as expected.
