The US trade deficit widened to a record high in August, reflecting an increase in imports of consumer goods and industrial products. The trade deficit in goods and services widened 4.2 per cent to $73.3 billion in August from a revised $70.3 billion in July, according to data released by the Ministry of Commerce on Tuesday. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg had a median forecast of $70.8 billion. Imports of goods and services rose 1.4 per cent to a record $287 billion in August.
