The Biden administration calls for supplementary unemployment benefits to expire in early September as planned
In a letter to members of Congress, Yellen and the Secretary of Labor said that states could still use anti-epidemic aid funds to help the unemployed. The Biden administration said in a letter to lawmakers on Thursday that supplementary unemployment benefits should be allowed to expire as planned in more than two weeks, but given the Delta epidemic, state and local governments can continue to use anti-epidemic funds to provide unemployment assistance after the deadline. Finance Secretary Yellen and Labor Secretary Marty Walsh wrote, "in some states with a large number of unemployed, it may be reasonable to allow the unemployed to continue to receive assistance for a longer period of time.
